A new advocacy group in Washington DC is pushing its anti-drinking and driving agenda way beyond the realms of MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving). This new group has been lobbying members of Congress and soliciting beverage and restaurant corporations in Washington, as well as across the entire nation, urging such businesses to ban those of legal drinking age from consuming even one glass of beer, wine or distilled spirits while dining in local restaurants or local pubs and taverns with their families, friends and co-workers. According to this new Neo-prohibitionist group even the most responsible and moderate drinker with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.02 is just as guilty and impaired getting behind the wheel as a drunk driver with a BAC of over 0.08.
There they go again barking up the wrong tree, and trying to take away your right to drink a healthy beverage with your meal: a glass of beer or a glass of wine. It’s the wrong tree, because groups, really concerned about drunk driving, should lobby to get the car industry to install in every car an alcohol ignition lock that prevents the car from starting when it detects a driver with a BAC of over 0.08. It’s easy, the technology exists, it’s cheap, it’s more efficient, and it’s solves the problem at its roots. By not doing the right thing, these zealots prove that their ultimate goal is Prohibition.
